PwC Manager in Kenya Dies of Apparent Suicide at Work

A manager at PwC’s office in the Westlands neighborhood in Nairobi, Kenya, died on Friday morning of an apparent suicide, after he fell from the 17th floor of PwC Tower and landed on the balcony of the second floor of the building.

The employee was identified as Stephen Mumbo, according to Peter Ngahu, PwC country and regional senior partner, Eastern Africa.

Mumbo was pronounced dead on arrival at Aga Khan Hospital, according to the Daily Nation. Police are treating his death as a suicide, according to another report.

In an email to staff, Ngahu wrote:

Dear colleagues,

It is with great sadness that I announce that following the incident reported earlier in Richard’s email, we have lost one of our own, Stephen Mumbo. Steve was a manager in the BRS business unit in Advisory.

We are all in a state of shock and disbelief. Our collective grief and sense of loss at this time is profound; but it can not compare to what Steve’s family must be feeling. Our hearts and prayers go out to them.

Investigations on the incident are continuing and we will update you when we have further clarity on the incident. Please keep Steve’s family in your thoughts and prayers at this trying time.

According to published reports, Ngahu issued the following statement:

It is with great sadness that we confirm that there was a tragic incident at the PwC Kenya offices this morning where we lost one of our colleagues Stephen Mumbo. Steve fell off 17^th floor early this morning. Investigations are on-going by the relevant authorities.

Our collective grief and sense of loss at this time is profound; but it cannot compare to what Steve’s family must be feeling. Our hearts and prayers go out to them.

This is an unfortunate incident and a big blow to the PwC family.

Police have not released a motive yet for Mumbo’s apparent suicide.
